The Fall Foliage Half Marathon and 5k run was last month at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, NY. For local runners, I highly recommend this race. It is a flat course, well-organized, and because it is at the fairgrounds there are actually bathrooms! Another bonus — race time is at 10am for the half and 10:15am for the 5k. Perfect because I am NOT a morning runner. I know so many runners like to go early or head out for races at 4am, but I’m happy to sleep in and leave my house at 8:30am.
I ran the race with Dan (the husband). Just when I think I’m not a morning person…
Not a posed picture, he had some time on his hands before the race started. He doesn’t love running so I’m just happy he’s willing to entertain me and join me for a race. I feel like I have seen him in this pose before….
Yep, there it is! That was before our Miles of Hope 5k in April. In all fairness, it was cold, windy and rainy for that race or maybe he’s just going internal to get pumped up for the race.
Back to the Fall Foliage 5k. The weather was cool, clear and overcast. This is what Dan looks like awake.
I really wanted to race this 5k because I’m hoping to do some 10k races and 10 milers this Spring. I also really wanted to beat Dan. 🙂 Like I said, he’s not really into running which is unfortunate because he’s really good at it! Dan was out of town the 3 weeks leading up to the race and I got sick with a nasty cold that everyone in the Hudson Valley seemed to have at the time. I was bummed because I couldn’t run at all for over a week and being the only one at home with the kids made finding time to run really difficult. I did manage to get in a couple of runs before the race and I walked a lot until my congestion cleared. Dan on the other hand, was out of town for work and without kids so he got some great work-outs in over those few weeks. My idea of beating him was looking less and less likely!
I really just like to run so I was happy to be there and the morning of the race, I felt really good! I felt even better after the first mile when I realized I was running at a decent pace so I went for it and I got my 5k PR! I finished with a time of 26:11 (8:26 pace). I placed in the top 10 of my age group consisting of over 70 runners. As for beating Dan…. that didn’t happen. He beat me by 12 seconds. 12 seconds! We had a lot of fun and both of us had a great race!
Then it was time for brunch! I was actually ready for brunch before the race even started. We were ready for some post race Bloody Marys and lots of food. A friend of mine told me about her cousin’s new restaurant that just opened right by the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. We decided to give it a try and I’m so glad we did. Go try Bangers Gastropub in Rhinebeck! I got their eggs Benedict with corned beef instead of the typical Canadian Bacon. I won’t eat eggs Benedict any other way. Perfect post run meal!
What is your favorite post run meal?
Does anyone have any fall races planned before it gets too cold?
